Relationship between sleep duration and weight gain
It has long been investigating the relationship between sleep duration and weight control. Now U.S. researchers have discovered the key role of calcium channels.
The team led by Victor Uebele, Merck Laboratories, West Point (United States) found the association between calcium channel T and the maintenance of body weight in mice. The work suggests that sleep and treatments that regulate the circadian rhythm can help fight obesity.
Previous studies showed that the lack of T-type calcium channel CaV3.1 in mice causes a change in patterns of sleep and wakefulness. In this study we found that mice lacking this calcium channel had difficulty gaining weight, even if they ate a diet high in fat. The researchers administered a drug to rodents specific antagonist of the T-type calcium channels The mice showed an increase in hours of Read the rest of this entry »
