Hearing loss in adolescents may be related to exposure to smoke snuff
The rate of hearing loss is cumulative and increases with the level of cotinine in the blood found passive smoke exposure is associated with an increased risk of hearing loss among teenagers, according to a study published in the July issue of Archives of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery, one of the JAMA & Archives.
Approximately 60 percent of U.S. children are exposed to smoke snuff, according to information in the article. Studies have linked exposure to snuff smoke, prenatal or childhood, various health problems, such as low birth weight, respiratory infections, behavioral problems and otitis media. Children exposed to smoke snuff are more likely to develop recurrent otitis media, the authors note. Passive smoking also has the potential to have an impact on the development of listening, which can lead to sensorineural hearing loss, they added.
